How to Create Hair Selection Using Photoshop

In this tutorial, we will learn about hair selection using adobe photoshop. You can use Adobe Photoshop CS6 or lower to create this effect. Now, let’s begins.

You will need model for the tutorial.

First, open the image that will be edited in photoshop. After that, duplicate the layer by hit Cmd/Ctrl + J on the keyboard. Now, we will use the duplicated layer to this tutorial so you can hide the background layer by clicking on the eye of the background layer.


Next, select the Channel menu. There are 4 layers in the channel menu RGB Layer, Red Layer, Green Layer, and Blue Layer.


In this step, I will choose the highest contrast layer so I choose Blue Layer.


Duplicate the Blue Layer by right click and then select Duplicate channel. Now we have Blue Copy channel. To create this selection, please select the Blue Copy Layer.


I will create darken effect to the hair so I choose Burn tool to create this effect. For the settings, you can look at the following picture.


Now, brush to the hair areas until have more dark color.


To make a selection, click Select > Load Selection. Just click OK.


Now we have a selection, but you can see the outside of hair areas that still selected. So, I will reduce the selection.


Select the RGB Channel, then go to Layer Menu. Now select Quick Selection Tool and choose Subtract from selection mode.


You can brush to outside of hair areas for reduce the selection.


Hit delete key on the keyboard. Then click Select > Deselect for delete the selection.
